- This book was helpful. I am thrilled that this story had a happy ending as I am a big advocat for Ukrainian orphans. However, I kept cringing when reading the book's twists and turns. This family took one step forward and six steps back so many times. Realistically a Ukrainian adoption should cost no more than $23 000 if you go through an agency or $15 000 if you use just a facilitator and do most of the paperwork yourself. I think a great idea for prospective adoptive parents would be to host first, then host the same child again, and if you are very sure it's a good fit for both child and family, go ahead and adopt. Very important - do a lot of homework when deciding on the right hosting agency though. You should not pay more than $3 000 to host a child from Ukraine, and ask for lots of references. These costs are based on today's date - December 2011.
- We are in the midst of our own Ukrainian adoption story and I found this account to be easily read, very informative, and quite helpful in relieving the fear of the unknown. There are "simple" steps in this process that are not simple at all, questions one has that can't be answered except by someone who has been there, and a variety of nuances that often get left undescribed. The Redman's help dispel the mysterious unknown by sharing their own journey and pointing out things they wished they had known so that we will not go in unprepared. It was well worth the money ... especially since they give all of the profits to benefit their orphanage there. I am blogging about our journey ([...]), as have many others, but having the entirety in a book is a beautiful thing!
- Very good book, but I'm hoping our experience goes a little smoother! 😉
