Benjamin Pratt’s school is about to become the site of a new amusement park. It sounds like a dream come true! But lately, Ben has been wondering if he’s going to like an amusement park in the middle of his town—with all the buses and traffic and eight dollar slices of pizza. It’s going to change everything. And, Ben is not so big on all the new changes in his life, like how his dad has moved out and started living in the marina on what used to be the "family” sailboat. Maybe it would be nice if the school just stayed as it is. He likes the school. Loves it, actually. It’s over 200 years old and sits right on the harbor. The playground has ocean breezes and the classrooms have million dollar views…MILLION DOLLAR views. And after a chance—and final—run-in with the school janitor, Ben starts to discover that these MILLION DOLLAR views have a lot to do with the deal to sell the school property. But, as much as the town wants to believe it, the school does not belong to the local government. It belongs to the CHILDREN and these children have the right to defend it!
Don’t think Ben, his friend Jill (and the tag-along Robert) can ruin a multimillion dollar real estate deal? Then you don’t know the history and the power of the Keepers of the School. A suspenseful six book series, book one, We the Children, starts the battle on land and on sea. It’s a race to keep the school from turning into a ticket booth and these kids are about to discover just how threatening a little knowledge can be.

- "The Keepers of the School" is planned to be a six volume series. This is volume one. Volumes two and three are also available. It's about one every 9 months or so, so if you start now you'll have to wait one or two years for a final resolution of the mystery and the larger story arcs. I would be very reluctant to start a young reader on this and then test his or her patience and memory while waiting for the final books. That got very old with Harry Potter, and this is a much thinner and less compelling series to be waiting for. It wouldn't be so bad if each book was more or less a stand-alone, with just a unifying theme and recurring characters to keep it a series, (like "The Hardy Boys" or a similar set). But this is more like a six act play, and nothing gets resolved in book one, and it feels like nothing will really be resolved until book six.
So, we do have decently written characters, although the divorcing parents angle is getting a little tired in all of these young reader books. We also have good clues, some adventure, and a lot of looking around and finding out things, which is the strongest suit of the book. There's no magic or fantasy, and the kid heroes have to figure things out, which is a nice albeit old-fashioned approach.
The upshot is that I'm going to wait on this until we are closer to the release of book six, and then introduce it as a set. I'd just hate to get a kid involved in this and then tell him to sit tight for a few years.

Permalink - My daughter and I decided to give this series a try and we both love it! The books follow a group of three children who are trying to save their school by uncovering hidden "safeguards" that were hidden throughout the school two hundred years ago by the creator of the school, Captain Duncan Oaks. I don't want to say anymore than that or I will give something away. The books are interesting, full of historical information, suspensful and we love that the children have to be detectives and solve the clues that lead them to the next safeguard. There are villains but they are not dangerous just a little creepy ) I would recommend these books to all of my friends. If your child likes a good mystery then they would love the Keepers of the School series.
- Ordered for my 9yr. Old nephew who loves chapter/series booksbooks.
- Love this series. My son's librarian at school introduced us to it. This book seemed to accomplish less than the others, but we still enjoyed reading it. We are hoping that the next one has all the excitement the first few did.
- This series is very popular with my little guy, and I was very pleased with the price and quality of it.
- Let me start off with, I had been having problems with getting my youngest into reading. No matter what I downloaded or bought or even the ones she picked out, she was disinterested in. Until...this series!!!! There's not much more I can say. If it got her interested I believe it will others.
I'm sorry I'm so vague about everything, it's just I'm so excited to see her reading beside the rest of us every night during reading time & actually reading!! - This is a good story-line, especially for 10-12 year olds--maybe a little more for boys than girls, but the girl character in the book is a strong character. The mystery that the children must solve is not easy, and they have to be clever, use their intelligence, and outsmart the greedy adults in the story. I enjoy reading about their adventures, but I especially like how they think. I'm saving all of the books for my grandson to grow into.
- I have read many of Andrew Clements books as an elementary librarian and he is a favorite among the students of my school. I realize this is a first in a series, however this book just didn't get my interest. Clements reputation being so high with me in the past, I will try the next "Keepers of the School" and see if it gets better.
