Chance for Rain A Novel Tricia Downing 9780998430232 Books Reviews

  • I enjoyed the well rounded story-just enough romance, just enough tension, just enough learning about a way of life I didn't know about. Everything may have gotten tied up a little too happily at the end but I was cheering for Rainey the entire time and I identified with her enough that I wanted the happy ending. This is a fun and engaging book. At times the reader must ask herself, "what would I have done?"

  • Love it!!
  • In her debut novel, Tricia Downing gives readers a glimpse into what it's like to have your life suddenly changed, and what it's like to pick up the pieces and move on. The protagonist, Rainey demonstrates resilience, as well as fragility, and isn't too perfect - which makes the story much more believable.

In my almost-21 years of using a wheelchair, I've only read a handful of fiction books where a main character has a disability. Typically they get a lot wrong, and the inaccuracies are so distracting that I can't even pay attention to the story. This is definitely not the case with Chance for Rain! From wheelchair-isms ("hey speed racer, slow down or you'll get a ticket") to the feeling of what it's like to be introduced to someone who can't stop staring at your chair, Downing depicts life in a wheelchair accurately. She hasn't revealed every little secret, as this isn't a medical drama.

Although I originally heard that this book was classified as a romance novel, and much of the book is about finding (and accepting) love, really it's about the different relationships in Rainey's life, which is mentioned in the Q&A in the back. Definitely consider reading, even if you're not sure about romance.

I enjoyed this read, and look forward to more!
  • THIS IS HAPPENING NOW.... I am cut and pasting my review of Chance for Rain, by Tricia Downing - my cousin and one of my personal heroes...

    Chance for Rain

This is my first EVER book review, so bare with me as I try my first one! *footnote* I have known the author for 48 (49?) years - as she is my cousin and we have spent large amounts of time together growing up. I was fortunate to spend a significant amount of time with Trish when she came out to LA for a medical study ~16 (?) years ago when she was first beginning her journey in her wheelchair. I will try and dig up some photographs of those magical moments of us swimming in Stephen Herek’s pool, driving down Sunset in my jeep with the top down - wheelchair tossed in the backseat, and drinking by the sea.

Chance for Rain is a book about a thirty-something year old woman (Rainey) who is looking for love after years of deftly avoiding the subject. She has spent the last seventeen years of her life concentrating her attention on her widowed father, her friends, her career and her two daredevil pursuits - skiing and race car driving. Like the author, our protagonist navigates the world in a wheelchair, as she survived a deadly car crash with an injury that rendered her a paraplegic. *Now, these sentences are hard to craft - because, as you will find in the book - most people who ambulate in a wheelchair do not like certain terms or phrases e.g. suffered, stricken, confined etc. This is tricky territory, and as a cousin of one such individual? I have found myself making profound verbal and physical errors over the years, many of which showed up in the book. (I’m not saying she used MY specific politically incorrect or impolite mistakes? But, I’m not not saying that either.)

But, let’s get back to RAINEY! She is the star of our show and a great show it is. As a lover of all things love and loss, (love me a good cry,) this book delivers on every level. Rainey jumps into online dating feet first (I said it,) and I found myself flipping page after page of her online correspondence with a potential suitor (the impossibly perfect - or is he?,) Brian. When Rainey can no longer play the, “I want to take it slow” card in her online courtship, she gets very sneaky on finding out how Brian will react to falling for a “wheely girl.” (her words, not mine.)

Tricia attacks her first novel with the enthusiasm that Rainey takes to the slopes and speedways. It is exciting and skillfully executed, plus there is never a dull moment.

Do yourself a favor and order up a copy of Chance for Rain on TODAY to get Trish a FIRST PLACE on the podium of online sales. If you aren’t in a place financially to order up a copy of Tricia’s book? Go to your local library and ask for them to get a copy in. It will cost you ZERO dollars and ZERO cents and will put my cousin on shelves all over the country for years to come.

The book also comes with talking points and exclusive extra content for those of you that run Book Clubs.

  • This book is about a womens strength & perseverance, friendship, family, and wanting to find her true love. Once I started reading I couldn't stop. The anticipation of what happens next made it hard to put this book down till I got to end. It was such a great read. I look forward to the authors next book.
  • For someone who only reads autobiographies, Trish did a great job of keeping me intrigued throughout the book. Very well written and an easy read.
  • Think book is beautiful and a inspirational love story..
