Great book. Almost an historical novel. The paintings are reproduced well. I will be looking for a more recent book on Velazquez because this book indicates many of the paintings were under restoration at the time of printing and I would like to see how they turned out. The historical data is fascinating. What an artist!
I like the idea of this book, but I wanted a lot more full pictures of the full paintings. I received this as a gift so I feel awful looking a gift horse in the mouth, but this wasn't what I was expecting. My hope was to see full pages with each page filled more to the brim with paintings, but it seems like the full color pages were reserved for details of the paintings, instead giving us a small thumbnail of the actual painting it was from. Check out my attached photos to see what I mean; the three paintings there are the largest we see of those paintings anywhere in the book, and this seems to be the pattern all throughout. There are maybe two or three total pictures that the author let a picture take the full page spread. Anyway, that's my two cents. Probably a great source of information for a college essay, but not nearly as picture - heavy as I was hoping for.
