"It is very repetitive and the online games are not very well developed. Though it is stuctured they leave it up to you to come up with fun things to do with not enough ideas not even on the website. Google provides me with the same amount of material and lesson plan at a fraction of the cost. Also it is so incredibly difficult to get everything back in the box. Folding a map back is easier."

- I bought this to teach my grandson to read. I taught my daughter to read using the original Hooked on Phonics. This was about 27 years ago. The original was amazing. This one stinks! It does not follow the same format as the original. It says it "adheres to National and State Standards." That is the problem. It doesn't stick to an easy to use, traditional phonics approach. I regret buying it. I tried it with my grandson, but it really didn't work the way I had hoped. I would return it, but I have stickers on some of the pages. I do not recommend this product. I wish they'd go back to the original format.
- Hooked on Phonics has been around since I was a kid, and so when it came time to work with my three-year-old on learning how to read, this seemed like a no-brainer. Who can think of this product without remembering the commercial and a bunch of kids exclaiming, "Hooked on Phonics worked for me!" Well, it doesn't work for me.
The materials included are a workbook, stickers, flash cards, story books, and a DVD. The DVD and flash cards are meant to reinforce the lesson learned from the workbook. The workbook itself has each letter of the alphabet on each page, practice on the next page, and after about 5 letters does a review. After each lesson your child can put a star on the page to show he's accomplished that letter. The sticker is the best part of the whole deal. The pages are extremely basic and something I could have either put together myself or printed for free off the internet. It shows a big picture of the letter and next to it offers several suggestions of activities you can do with your child to help reinforce teaching the letter. Then, it gives you space for your child to trace the letter and several pictures of objects that start with that letter. The DVD contains an alphabet song and then goes through each letter and the sound it makes. It's extremely basic and to me doesn't do enough to reinforce the lesson or even to teach the letter and it's sound. There's a Leap Frog video on Netflix that does a better job of teaching letters and sounds and doing so in a way that's memorable for a child.
I still go through the workbook and let my son watch the DVD, but I make a point to do other reinforcement activities and pages from other workbooks that we've bought in order for ensure he's really learning his letters and sounds, because this product simply does not do enough to do that on its own. While Hooked on Phonics may have gotten the job done in the past, it's coasting on its former success now and should be used as a supplementary tool rather than your main source for education. - some decent content for kids that dont know their ABCs but this doesnt not teach a kid how to read besides teaching them to associate words to alphabets buy the lvl 3 and 4 if you actually want to start teaching how to read
- this program works!! I started this DVD set when my son was 19mo, he is now 22 months and knows all his letters, the sounds they make, and can recognize them anywhere. At 1st I think he was memorizing them until we were out and he started pointing to the letters and saying the sounds and names! it comes with flash cards, and workbooks. I never used the work books, only the flash cards and the 2 DVDs that come with the kit. its so good of a program that my 22mo is bored now with the letters he knows them all and now i'm going to move onto the next kit which is kindergarten level. WORTH THE BUY, ITS GREAT
- This is a little expensive for stuff that can be found for free on the internet. I found a workbook that he likes better. It does have appropriate materials but only if you have a typical/ advanced child already.

- I bought this Hooked on Phonics item for my grandchildren. My daughter needed a home learning product to accommodate the multiple ages of her boys. Excellent price, excellent value.
