Tennessee Trout Waters BlueRibbon FlyFishing Guide Ian Rutter 0081127001217 Books Reviews

  • The author does a pretty good job of covering the diverse types and locations of trout fishing opportunities in East Tennessee.
Making the distinction among "tailwater", "lake" and "mountain streams" and the different approaches needed for each is quite helpful.
Offering alternatives for tailwater locations is also a big plus.
More detail on the streams could certainly be included, but that level of detail can change year over year with a flood event or wild fire.
All in all, a good effort and an excellent resource by the author.
I'm giving this one four stars, as I do not know that five stars are possible in covering the trout fishing diversity in this area.
  • Good book on TN fly fishing. A must-have for any person Fly Fishing in TN
  • I wish this thing had a more detailed map...maybe a map insert that shows more detail. Best book for Tennessee that you will find though. It will make things much easier when you are trying to learn where all of the put ins and wading spots are.
  • I visit Tennessee in the Spring to fish the Park and the tailwaters, and Ian's book has been my sole guide to these waters since its publication. It covers a wide, wide range of rivers and streams, and delivers enough information to get you on the water with a reasonable idea about what's about to happen.

A nice touch is Rutter's listing of alternative fisheries (and drive times); should you arrive at a tailwater and discover the water release schedule has been altered, leaving you with an unfishable mess.

Rutter certainly knows these fisheries like the back of his hand (he's the top guide in the area, and lives on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park), and manages to impart a lot of information very quickly.

My only real complaint is that a longer book might be a bit more useful - in places, I'd love to have more information, though the somewhat transient nature of the tailwater fisheries (they live and die based on TVA flow schedules, which can change on a whim) and rapid development around some of the tailwaters (the Clinch being a prime example) would make it difficult to say much with any real precision.

A great & useful guide book.
  • I haven't been out on any of the rivers with this book yet, but it looks like it will be helpful. It doesn't seem to carry near the detail as the Wyoming one I have, but, still helpful.
  • Pictures, maps, and enough detail to get you moving in the right direction.
  • I ordered this book for my dad for fathers day and he seems to be liking the book very much. The only complaint that I would seem to have it that they took longer than I would have like to have arrived to him,
  • This is an excellent book about trout fishing in East Tennessee. A great guide for wading and drifting. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in trout fishing in East Tennessee.
