How do you avoid a Lewis Carroll Wonderland of defamation lawsuits, plagiarism scandals, and IRS proceedings? Many writers see the law as a Lewis Carroll fantasy—inside out and totally illogical. They would rather write than worry about legal issues. But authors who ignore the law are the real residents of Wonderland. Kathryn Page Camp uses everyday language and shares cases with interesting facts to explain the basic legal principles of interest to writers. Editorial Reviews A KIRKUS’ Indie Books of the Month Selection (April 2014). “A comprehensive, usable explanation of contracts, copyright and other key legal concepts that all writers need to understand.” KIRKUS REVIEWS “WRITERS IN WONDERLAND isn’t just informative and wise, it is FUN! Finally, a lawyer who can be helpful without making us want to scream.” Michael Poore, author of UP JUMPS THE DEVIL “In prose that is friendly but assertive, attorney Camp addresses readers like a speaker who knows the audience members have paid to hear her speak and who is determined to give them their money’s worth. And that she does.” CHRISTIAN COMMUNICATOR, book review by Amanda Dreher

"There are some things every author seeking publication needs to know about the law including, rights, copyright, liable, plagiarism, tax deductions etc., however, as a novelist, the last thing I want to do is be bored to death by some dry law book full of legal jargon I don't understand and don't want to understand. Camp has, while presenting accurate legal information, managed to keep my interest and explain the rules in a way an author can relate. At times, she even made me laugh with some of the fascinating and funny examples she gives taken from actual cases. One of the most bizarre was the "author" who reviewed houses of prostitution and claimed his visits as a deductible expense. Her Wonderland theme is clever and apropos and gives a more relaxed and welcoming tone to what is usually a dry subject. So, if you want to avoid bad contracts, lost rights, getting sued or being harassed by the IRS while you seek some level of fortune as a writer, I suggest you read this book."

  • There are some things every author seeking publication needs to know about the law including, rights, copyright, liable, plagiarism, tax deductions etc., however, as a novelist, the last thing I want to do is be bored to death by some dry law book full of legal jargon I don't understand and don't want to understand. • As a children's author, I dread the side of writing that includes plodding through contracts and other legalities. So I was truly delighted to find that Writers in Wonderland Keeping Your Words Legal was such an easy read. It explains things that every writer should think about but doesn't want to, putting it into language that can actually be understood. Camp includes examples from interesting court cases to illustrate her points and help put things in perspective. As a reader, I enjoyed the chapter openings which referred to the works of Lewis Carroll. You'll also want to read the Appendices for resources, a glossary, and the complete text of the poems quoted in the book. Writers in Wonderland is well-written, informative, and a great read.
