- What a terrific idea for a book and what a terrific book! I enjoyed it so much! The author tackles so many aspects of Israeli life and also what one encounters meeting, greeting and staying in Israel with those who live there as citizens! This book is informative and filled with clever comments, interesting snippets of history and best of all humor! Having many cousins in Israel with whom I feel a strong kinship I can relate to some of his cross cultural comments.
Colorni speaks about how Israels tend to be quite frank about what they have to say. In America, we would characterize this as "shooting from the hip" or "telling it like it is" which can sometimes be offensive. In Israel, he explains this attitude of bluntness is to be expected. Colorni explains that one should not expect an Israel to beat around the bush or be deceptively flattering. It's not their style! In Israel, they call this dugri! The author also talks about jobs in Israel. He explains that the job market is difficult for those who do not speak fluent Hebrew and favors native born citizens. "Blatant chutzpah is oftentimes exercised, though rarely acknowledged!
There are many examples in this delightful book of entertaining tidbits of information about this fascinating country and its diverse population. Colorni charms readers and educates on topics such as love and marriage, housing, elections, careers etc. A funny example about housing is when he explains that if you are hunting for an apartment you will definitely get a 2 story one. First one story about what you think you are getting and then another story about what you are actually getting. Lol.
Don't miss out on this wonderful book! It's a fun read and very helpful if you are planning on visiting or living in this fabulous country. - “Israel for Perplexed Beginners†had me laughing at its point-on description of Israelis I have encountered. I have traveled to Israel numerous times and love the people – but they took getting used to. Once I learned some of their quirky ways I joined in with their love of life. You will enjoy the book even if you have never visited Israel, and perhaps after reading it you will want to find out for yourself how accurate Colorini’s descriptions are.
