China Hidden Children Abandonment Adoption and the Human Costs of the OneChild Policy Kay Ann Johnson Books Reviews
- There is a lot of information in this book that I feel is important. However, the way it is written makes it very difficult to follow and take in. There is a lot of repetition. Constant references to what will be ahead in the book and explaining what and why things are in the book. It reads very strangely and that takes away from the information. Every chapter reads like a forward.
- Solid long term scientific on the ground studies of the real and changing reasons why children in China ended up in orphanages and adoptions over 20+ year period of time. Also suitable for adoptees 15 and above who want real information instead of the stories fed to their parents by adoption agencies and government officials. It gives a lot more perspective on the heartbreaking choices birth parents had to make.
- Kay Ann Johnson has given adoptive Western/European families of Chinese children a gift in her research and writing of this book. She thoughtfully and logically explains the arc of China's birth planning policy (it wasn't static--different eras/phases resulted in different actions by the Chinese government) from its inception in the 1980's until the 2000's and how that looked "on the ground" to the parents of out-of-plan children. These different phases of the birth planning policy/domestic adoption laws determined out-of-plan childrens' fates. As a parent of a daughter born in China, I am extremely grateful to have a better understanding of the possibilities that brought our daughter to us, as well as a better understanding of how the loss may have affected her birth parents. Kay Ann Johnson's book resonated with me and made sense of the bits and pieces I've read about, or been told about by the adoption community, because her research is much more in depth and informed by her time spent in China. This is a must read for all adoptive parents of Chinese born children, as well as for our children to read (now or in the future, depending upon their readiness for this information).
- This is a powerfully written book to be read by anyone wanting to know more adoptions from China. Professor Kay Ann Johnson skillfully narrates the stories of families in China deeply affected by the "one child" policy and the draconian ways it was enforced. I hope in some small way this book gives solace to the many children, especially girls, who were adopted from China, insofar as they can better understand that they were truly valued, but outside forces stolethem from their families, sometimes literally. This book put so much in perspective for me. I hope it does for others. This is a book that China adoptive parents must read, and share in age appropriate ways with their children.
- Excellent book! Prospective adoptive parents should read this book too.
Kay Johnson is an adoptive parent as well as an authority on China, a College professor of Chinese studies.
She has done years of research on this topic. Finally the truth is being told instead of the propaganda that has been so wodely shared and believed. Thank you kay for writing this amazing book. Please keep writing and sharing the stories of China birth families. Heart-wrenching as they are, the world needs to know the truth. - Dispels damaging myths and assumptions. Empowering for the adopted and their families.
Potentially, a powerful tool against a brutal regime. - Man, was I misinformed. You should read this book.
- An eye-opener.
