- Uncle Tom’s Cabin
5 The Famous Novel
Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in Connecticut to a Calvinist preacher and activist. Her husband was a professor at the Lane Theological Seminary and an ardent critic of slavery. They supported the Underground Railroad. She started writing this novel in 1851 as a serial in a magazine and published it as a book in 1852. It had a huge success, the most important American novel of the 19th century and controversial.
The story begins in Kentucky on the Shelby plantation where Tom is good, steady, sensible, pious slave. Eliza, a slave, has a child Harry. Their worth is discussed. The description tells about their society (Chapter 1). Eliza is married to George Harris from a neighboring estate who worked in a bagging factory and earned good wages (Chapter 2). George’s pet dog is killed so he decides to go to Canada and freedom (Chapter 3). Economic problems forces the sale of Tom, taking him away from his wife Chloe. Eliza decides to run away to save her young son from being sold (Chapter 5). Eliza crossed the ice floes in the Ohio river, a dangerous event (Chapter 7). She found shelter in a Quaker family. Other traders have taken young children from their mothers. Other men get paid to catch runaway slaves (Chapter 8). Tom says goodbye to Aunt Chloe, he is sold down the river (Chapter 10). Mrs. Shelby promises to buy him back when they are rich. A mother’s children are sold away (Chapter 12).
Separation of families is the worst feature of slavery, says a lady. A woman whose young child was taken away jumped into the river! A Quaker settlement gave shelter to Eliza (Chapter 13). She met her husband George. The St. Clare family is aboard the steamship (Chapter 14). When little Eva fell off the boat Tom jumped in to save her. Her father buys Tom. Chapter 15 tells about the St. Clare family. Mrs. St. Clare suffers from poor health. In Chapter 17 Eliza and George flee from slave catchers! A young girl named Topsy is bought by Mr. St. Clare (Chapter 20). Little Eva developed a cough and lost weight (Chapter 24). Eva dies (Chapter 26). Miss Ophelia asks for legal ownership of Topsy (Chapter 28). There is tragedy when Mr. St. Clare is killed when trying to disarm a man in a drunken brawl! The widow will sell their slaves and go back to her father’s plantation. Miss Ophelia wrote a letter to Mrs. Shelby (Chapter 29).
There are 45 chapters to this novel. The rest tells about Tom’s fate, being sold to Simon Legree and then beaten to death after two female slaves escaped and Tom won’t tell what he knows. This book tells about the inhumane treatment that is inherent in slavery. One problem is the language of this book; some of it is difficult to follow, and it is overly verbose at times. One solution considered at the time was colonization and migration to Liberia; that never worked out.
