"You can never have too many monsters! All of these were originally introduced for the classic D&D game, but can very easily be converted to AD&D standards with a minimum of fuss. Not only do you get classic "Games Workshop" style British artwork, but you also get such wonderful horrors as the Juggernaut, Soul Eater, Shroud Spider, Aquatic Beholder, Death Demon, Sabre Claw, Undead Dragon - about 200 in all! It's the long-lost Fiend Folio of the D&D game... highest recommendation."

- This book is a bit of an oddity because of its position in the broader ecosystem of Basic D&D. All of the "ordinary" monsters were included in the Basic book, so to have included those in this as well at the time would have been bulky and redundant. However, 30 years later it would have been a very nice reference to have, for all to have been in the same book. The authors could never have predicted retroclones, after all, nor that anyone would ever have wanted to use some of their books for different games. It's my understanding that at the time Gary Gygax had a very low opinion of contemporary D&D clones.
Overall this shares many of the same qualities that many of the monsters in the 1st edition Fiend Folio had namely that one can't imagine in what sort of situation one would use some of the monsters. Many have the "gotcha" effect of unexpected properties that is surprising (annoying) the first time around, and then becomes routine and uninteresting the second time they are used, limiting many of them to the heap of "one-and-done." The design/artwork of many of the monsters gives them a bizarre, childish quality as well, which was probably intentional as Basic was aimed at younger audiences.
All in all if one wants to run original Basic D&D, or have a slightly expanded menagerie for early D&D style retroclones, if this can be picked up for $10-$15, it is probably not a terrible purchase. However, it is strongly representative of a certain time and place in the 80s, but would be way more useful in the modern era if it contained all of the monsters included in all of the BECMI rulebooks instead of being just an addendum. - Historical piece and great for OSR / 0eD&D. It's not a massive book like the newer editions and has monsters that have been omitted in later versions. All the interior art is that oldschool B&W stuf.
- Comprehensive collection of Basic/Expert creatures
- Rules.
